Resistance Temperature Devices (RTDs)

  • Resistance Temperature Detectors

RTDs consist of a small, thin platinum or other metal wire coiled around a ceramic or glass core. As temperature fluctuations occur, the wire's resistance changes as the temperature changes. The difference in resistance can be measured to determine the temperature. RTDs have a high level of accuracy and are used in applications that require precise temperature measurements, including industrial process control, laboratory research, and automotive engines. RTD sensors are specifically useful where linearity, accuracy, interchangeability, and repeatability are essential.

Industrial Resistance Temperature Devices & Sensors

Resistance temperature detectors are powered devices that sense changes in resistance and display temperature in °F or °C. Like thermocouples, RTD sensors are widely used to monitor temperatures in industrial applications where linearity, accuracy, and repeatability are essential. DIN establishes two commonly used industrial grade RTDs: IEC-751 (International Electric Code) Class B + .30°C and Class A + .15°C @ 0°C. Elements in this section are 100Ω .00385 curve.

RTD Sensor Equipment Options

  • RTD sensor elements are primarily either a fine platinum coil (wire wound) or platinum deposited onto a ceramic substrate (thin film). The application largely determines the selection of the RTD sensor element, with the thin film being the preferred choice in most cases due to its lower cost and vibration resistance.
  • Thin film RTD elements are commonly used when faster response time is required, and minimal physical size is necessary.
  • Wire wound RTD elements are widely used for industrial RTD sensors or higher temperatures (above 260°C)
  • Low-temperature RTDs (-50 to 260°C) are designed to be more responsive to changes in temperature.
  • Mineral-insulated (MgO) sheathed resistance temperature detectors are available for higher temperature applications (650°C rating).

RTD Equipment for Chemical Processing, Power Generation, & More Industrial Applications

RTDs are often used in industrial applications where precise temperature measurement is crucial, including chemical and petrochemical processing, power generation, food and beverage processing, and automotive industries. RTDs are often preferred over other temperature-sensing devices for applications requiring high accuracy, stability, repeatability, and sensitivity.

Differences Between Thermocouples & RTDs

While the devices are used for similar purposes, there are important differences between thermocouples and RTDs. Key differences between thermocouples and RTDs include:
  • Mode of operation: Thermocouples produce voltage in response to a temperature difference between dissimilar metal junctions, while RTDs utilize the resistance change of a metal wire due to temperature fluctuations
  • RTDs offer higher accuracy, especially at lower temperatures, with typical accuracy levels of 0.1°C, while thermocouples' accuracy can vary depending on type and temperature range, usually within 1°C
  • RTDs typically have a narrower temperature range than thermocouples
  • Thermocouples respond faster to temperature changes with responses typically within milliseconds, while RTDs can take several seconds to respond
  • Thermocouples are generally less expensive than RTDs, although the cost can vary depending on the type
  • Thermocouples are generally more durable and can withstand higher temperatures, shock, and vibration than RTDs
